On April 25, 2023 at 03:00:57 local time, there was a 7.3 Mw Earthquake (BMKG) which was triggered by the movement of the Plate Tectonics with the epicenter in Siberut area, Mentawai, 207 Km northwest of Padang City. The earthquake had a depth of 84 km above sea level and the epicenter of the earthquake occurred in the area of Mentawai Seismic Gap Zone which MAIPARK has delineated in the 2023 risk zone map.
Since April 23 2023 there have been three significant events with magnitudes of 5.9, 6.1 and 5.5 Mw which can be considered as foreshock earthquakes. Based on beach ball analysis, the earthquake occurred with a vertical movement mechanism (thrust fault), meaning that it has the possibility to cause Tsunami.
Based on MAIPARK Catastrophe Modeling, the estimated loss for the Indonesian general insurance industry is minor, which is IDR 202,483,027 (exposure data was updated on April 25, 2023 at 13.48).
