IMPACT OF EARTHQUAKE DAMAGE IN MAJENE, WEST SULAWESI

Post On : January 15, 2021

The Mamuju earthquake with a magnitude of Mw=5.7 (USGS) was classified as a shallow earthquake with a hypocenter depth of 18 Km. The epicenter is located at coordinates 2.96 South Latitude and 118.89 East Longitude, or precisely located in the West Coast Region of Sulawesi at a distance of 4 km northwest of Majene. The earthquake did not have the potential to cause a tsunami. Based on the location of the epicenter and the depth of the hypocenter, it is most likely that this earthquake originated from the activity of the Local Land Fault, namely the Mamuju Fault.

The intensity of the shock on the surface based on the MAIPARK Cat Modeling was felt to be strong (V-VI MMI) in the three districts of Majene, Mamasa, Mamuju. The estimated loss through MCM modeling for the earthquake is 10-28 billion rupiah. MAIPARK will continue to monitor developments and reports from government agencies, such as BNPB and BMKG, for updates on the impact of damage.
