Friday morning, February 25, 2022, at 08.39 WIB, an earthquake measuring 6.2 M (BMKG) or 6.2 Mww (USGS) occurred in the West Sumatra region. The epicenter of the earthquake was 17 kilometers northeast of West Pasaman at a depth of 10 kilometers. The earthquake was caused by the Ankola Fault: a segment of the Sumatran Great Fault System. Based on the MCM1 simulation, the area affected by intensity VI (MMI) is Kab. Pasaman and Kab. West Pasaman. However, many areas in central Sumatra felt the earthquake at III - V MMI. The earthquake was also felt significant in Kuala Lumpur, possibly due to seismic amplification of the sub-soil structures beneath the Malaysian capital.
The last major earthquake of the Angkola Segment occurred in the 1800s. Since then, there has been no significant seismic activity. According to the MAIPARK database (of earthquake insurance policies), insurance exposure is quite high. The total portfolio affected in IV - VI MMI is IDR 26.7 trillion (12,879 risk).
