RELATIVE PLATE MOTIONS
Indonesian archipelago is located in the convergence zone of four major tectonic plates: Eurasian plate, Indian-Australian plate, Pacific plate and Philippine plate. Interaction of these plates affected the seismo-tectonic of the Indonesian region.
The Indian - Australian plate moving northwards relative to Eurasian plate and the Pacific plate moving westward relative to both Indian-Australian and Eurasian plate.
Moreover, as a result of the India and Australia plates converging with and subducting beneath the Sunda plate at a rate of approximately 50 to 70 mm/yr.
DISCUSSION
At 21:45 local time, April 6th 2016, a magnitude 6.0 occurred at Indian Ocean. The quake struck 42 miles (68 km) from Pameungpeuk, near the coast of southwestern Java. The epicenter was on offshore with a depth of 35 km, but there were no tsunami warning was issued.
The earthquake occur within Eurasian Plate, overriding the subducting Indian Ocean - Australian Oceanic Plate. The quake was shallow and the centroid moment tensor show the Thrust Mechanism with 29 - Dip Angle (Gradual Slope). Therefore, people quite felt the tremor, especially in West Java area and part of Jabodetabek. Garut Regency was most the most affected by the tremor caused by a close distance to the epicenter.
The highest intensity (MMI) was calculated in Garut IV-V MMI, in Cianjur III-IV MMI, Tasikmalaya III-IV MMI and Bandung II-III MMI.
EXPOSURE AND LOSS
Preliminary result from MAIPARK Cat-model has estimated no losses or very minor losses from this event. Temporary report from local disaster management agency (BPBD) stated no damages or casualties. We are still following the report form BPBD and insurances claim division to make better estimation.
